Heather, I love you so, so much. You are Good. I am so sorry this entitled ninny came into your inbox and deposited a steaming manure pile of Baptist judgment. But you are, as ever, gracious and sweet and kind and good. Grateful to know you. Lucky to get to read you, always.

Reading your book Heretic right now! So I know your comment to Heather comes from a deep place of knowing how she feels. Congrats on an excellent book.

thank you for writing this out, in the way that it helps demonstrate how ridiculous this behavior is and how easily we internalize these weird and irrational judgments, and for providing a path, wisdom, something true that can be done in the face of all that is nonsense

I just love reading what you write so much. I’m currently in a ME crash and beating myself up for bringing this on myself through my own choices etc. There are so many things I want to do but it does hurt my body and brain quite a lot and it’s so frustrating and sad. I also grew up in a Baptist family and church so I am familiar with how they view disability and queerness and chronic illnesses - I hate that anyone would write to you and presume to speak on behalf of God. The audacity!

I’m hoping that you get some relief from the crash symptoms soon 💜

Hi. Artist here with already a chronic condition (POTS), in my very-guilty, too-long-for-me-and-everyone-else covid recovery. This made me feel a sweetness towards myself and towards life I needed. Thank you. I think your words are very meteoric when they hit my inbox, haha. I really really related to the story of the cheeseburger and how when the brain fog overwhelms, my stupidity really feels like the worst thing I'm afflicting the world with and those I love, somehow more punishing than the physical limitations. I appreciate how feeling warmth towards you, helps me be kind towards me when I inevitably lose my wallet again.

Reading this post finally made me realize why I have long COVID: because I’m an atheist. WOW. I guess it’s a good thing I’m not also a lesbian? Imagine his wrath?!

These people who call out folks in wheelchairs for not having faith I guess have never driven over a bridge in their lives. The level of ignorance astounds.

This was a really great one!!

Last year they named part of a street after Audre Lorde, in Berlin. Keep at it!

I hate that people can’t mind their own damned business. You, as usual, are brilliant and this is magnificently crafted. Sending love from a lesbian long-Covid sufferer in Philadelphia. Maybe we can control the weather together.

The horrid message you shared that came to you from someone who knew you years ago has been stuck in my mind. I identify as an atheist but am also a member of an American Baptist church. We are nothing like Southern Baptists or any of those other rule driven cohorts that use the word "Baptist" in their identity. In fact, my church is a member of AWAB, the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists, founded in 1993 by a dozen churches in favor of the full inclusion of LGBTQ+ people. My church joined AWAB in 2014, the first to do so in Oregon.

On October 6th, our pastor's message demonstrated some of the difficulty that comes from being inclusive. If you have 14 minutes to spend, I think you might find her sermon worth viewing.

I recognize my suggestion is out of line and might be more than you even want to think about. That is fine, of course. You are in charge of your life. On the off chance it might pique your interest, I'm sending the link:

What a small life this 'friend' must live, to be so interested and invested in your life. And how strange to invest anyone with power over hurricanes and long covid.

It's such an excuse, to blame others for their disabilities. Then you don't have to consider how society and people contribute to disabling the person even more.
