I hear your southern in this more than many of your other essays. And I rightly like it! As always, you made me cry tears of joyness several times, and in return I’ll be praying for Tom from SC to GA this morning.

Came here to say the same. Especially when you spelled out New York City, I heard my family asking me when I was going to "come home and visit from Wurshington and Murlind to Nah Calina."

Also, I'm grateful that you've had all this time with your grandparents and I hope you have so much more.

(And side note Go Wolfpack x2 :))

And now I'm crying. What a beautiful essay about a beautiful relationship. I'll be thinking good thoughts for you and your grandpa and your family.

And now I'm sobbing.

My Papaw and I - we had a complicated relationship, but he taught me how to pitch a fastball, condition my mitt with oil in the oven, and catch the ball in the web so it didn't hurt my hand; and though he was too sick to go to my games, he listened to every one of my high school baseball games on the radio. There weren't any girls baseball, or even softball, teams in my school. He was a plumber by trade, before the emphysema took his breath and stamina, and he taught me the difference between a Crescent and a pipe wrench. Thanks for reminding me of the man who raised me, and accepted me from the day I was born.

i haven't thought of you tackling your grandma in a long time so I got to laugh again. All I can say about Tom is that you love each other fiercely and it's deeper than the fear and anxiety. Maybe you can rest in that for a minute or two while you wait. Love you.

This was very moving - I have lost all my grandparents (pretty recently) and I’ve been very reflective on how they loved me so deeply, even when I came out (twice), and it ran up against their religious faith. I very much hope that Tom gets the best possible care and recovers very well. Hugs to you if you would like them. Thank you for writing so beautifully 💜

Wonderful story. Thanks so much for sharing. It’s truly a wonderful thing to have close relationships with your grandparents. I know mine is definitely like a second mother to me.
